I've just had my first live experience at Hop Farm Festival and was blown away. Hopefully it won't be my last!
When did you guys first see Neil and where?
Reviews would be nice too!
Thanks

I've not seen him yet. He doesn't come close enough to where I live that I can actually get transportation (no way I could drive there myself). Money sucks. He came the closest he comes to me on his birthday last year (over six hours away), and I spent the night whining/crying over not being able to be there. One day though, I have to see him. Just gotta work out how. :/

27th August 1995, headlining the final night of the Reading Festival was my first Neil Young gig. He was touring the Mirrorball album, and had all of Pearl Jam (minus Eddie Vedder), and Brendan O'Brien, as his backing band! I remember him wearing a cool white suit over his plaid shirt! The songs were ferocious with such a great band behind him, and the setlist ran:
Big Green Country Song X Act Of Love Downtown Mr. Soul Scenery The Needle And The Damage Done Hey Hey, My My After The Gold Rush Throw Your Hatred Down Cortez The Killer Rockin' In The Free World
What a thrill that was ;D
(also saw Soundgarden earlier that day, and The Foo Fighters in a tent; one of their first UK gigs I think).

Bizarrely I played on the main stage at Reading in 1995 as percussionist for Shed Seven! Unfortunately we had to leave on the Saturday and I missed Neil

Now that is a bizarre anecdote!! I used to love Shed Seven, aren't they back together touring now?

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - The 3rd best garage band in the world!(as it said on the tickets)
Mr. Soul Cinnamon Girl The Loner Down By The River Heart Of Gold After The Gold Rush Too Lonely When Your Lonely Heart Breaks Drive Back Opera Star Cortez The Killer Sugar Mountain Comes A Time Mideast Vacation Long Walk Home Powderfinger Like A Hurricane Hey Hey, My My
what can i say my first neil young gig and still probably the best...i was 15 at the time and it was the first time i had been allowed down to dublin from Belfast on my own (well with a mate) to go to a concert...the whole day was just magical...from cracking open a beer as soon as we got on the bus at 9am to getting stoned to f**k with a middle aged woman who regaled us with tales of seeing Hendrix and led zeppelin in concert in belfast...it was everything a young wannabe hippy could ask for...by the time neil came on my mate and I were at fever pitch and then we were off straight into Mr soul...from my favourite album ever...to say i was excited was an understatement, i really didnt know what to expect, in fact someone on the way down had told me it was likely that neuil might only play new stuff and not to expect too much old stuff etc, but here he was in front of me ripping through mr soul....jesus was i happy...but then it all just got better as Cinnamon Girl The Loner Down By The River Heart Of Gold etc all followed.
ok he played some new stuff but that was fine by me as they were all great songs too but even with that the nuggets were still being thrown in.
all in all it was one of the best days of my life (ive had a few thankfully) and though every NY gig after that has been special in its own way, this being the first was the one Ill never forget.

That's a pretty d**n fine setlist; a few gems in there for sure! Don't think I've even seen the likes of Mideast Vacation and Opera Star live!

I have a friend who tells me there's a video of Neil in Vienna on this tour (Live In Vienna 1987, I've been trying to find a copy of the show and have had no luck) where, during "Hey Hey My My", he kisses, licks and bites the neck of his guitar. Did he do that during this show, too? O.o I'd die to have seen him do that in person.

DbtR, you have it bad girl; haha!
A 1987 gig; it seems we have a winner for the earliest gig attendance then!

Haha, I guess I kinda do. :3 But come on, he KISSES and LICKS and BITES his GUITAR. If that's not sexy, I don't know what is.

He *did*, didn't he? You're not saying anything, so he *must have*. I have a theory he made it part of the tour, was just curious to know if I was right.

You've already lost your crown mate Ragged Glory posted in the 'introduce yourself' thread saying they say the 1974 CSNY tour, '76 Stills/Young tour, and say Neil with the International Harvesters in a bar I await further details!
