Celebrated my birthday last weekend in a sleepy little college town in northern Arizona. Flagstaff that is.
Saw Steve for the first time in a small theater (maybe 200 seats) called the Orpheum. Lots of history and ghost sightings there. :-) We scored front row seats through his pre sale on his site. Very nice.
His wife opened the show and performed a lovely set. Steve came on sans band and did a lovely acoustic show although he did have some back up help at times from his wife and a dj. Yep, an album spinning dude who added quite a bit to the sound. He seemed a bit bored at first but warmed up nicely. The presence of his wife on stage certainly sparked him up a bit. Ah love.
It was an enjoyable evening of music BUT, the most fun for me was as we entered the theater they were playing Neil!! Now that is pathetic.

I love Steve's music too; that last album Washington Square Serenade is really fantastic. The use of beats and samples was quite brave from an artist like Steve, but it worked brilliantly. I caught him on what sounds like the same tour, last month in Brighton (UK). You should've seen some of the 'older' punters exchange quizzical looks when the DJ kicked in with some beats, haha!

I have to tell you, the DJ did surprise me a bit but, as you said, he did make it work very nicely.

I believe I told you my Steve Earl story RU, but the rest of the folks here have't heard it. I saw him on his tour before the last election when it was a bit politically oriented and I said, "ABBA". He says what about ABBA I say, anybody but Bush again?
I made Steve smile!

Joan Baez has a new album coming out. I heard a cut today which was a cover of a Steve Earl song. It was excellent.

Yeppers, Steve is quite political. He went on and on quite a diatribe about illegal immigration a the show I saw. I totally disagree with his stand but respect his opinion of course. He has some pretty in your face political songs out currently...one of them is on Neil's songs of the times site.
Funny we both made him smile RG! There were two loud, obnoxious, screaming in our ear (during quiet songs) talking on cell phones and just truly horrible behaved women directly behind us. At one point one of them screeched and I mean screeched, I love you Steve. He stopped playing and looked directly at me! I quietly said, it wasn't me. He cracked up!
